As APC is allegedly set to welcome 5 PDP governors; PDP says 6 APC governors and 27 National Assembly lawmakers would join them soon

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), few hours after reports of 5 PDP governors seeking a deal with President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of 2019, alleges that it has concluded discussions with six (6) All Progressives Congress Governors and 27 APC members in the National Assembly to defect to the PDP.

The Nation had reported that 5 governors of PDP (3 from the South-East and 2 from the South-South) were seeking a secret pact with Buhari to support his re-election bid.

According to The Nation, an undisclosed source said that; “the five governors are lobbying APC leaders to help cut a deal with President Buhari by which the President will allow them to be re-elected in return for their support for Buhari to win the presidential election in those PDP states.

“The arrowhead of the group (from the Southsouth) has been talking to two APC governors. He is pleading with the governors to present the request of the five PDP governors to the President ahead of a likely face-to-face meeting.”

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, some aggrieved members of the ruling party had dumped the APC for opposition parties, with most of them joining the former ruling party, PDP.

If this looming defection happens, it will be a big problem for the ruling party as it has clearly not recovered from the recent defections of lawmakers at the National Assembly.

It will also mean that the unfeasible task of sacking Senate President Bukola Saraki who also dumped the APC for PDP would be totally impossible.

Also, the defection of these 6 governors would mean PDP taking control of 9 states (including the previous 3 governors who had already defected). These would no doubt practically cripple APC.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State, and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, who won their elections in 2015 under the APC are currently members of the PDP.

According to the spokesman of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, discussions with the planned defectors on control of party structures in the affected states and senatorial zone had already reached advanced stage.

“In line with decisions reached at the discussions, the members of the National Assembly decamping to the PDP will cross-carpet at the reconvening of session in the two chambers, which will increase the PDP majority in both chambers.

“All grey areas of the agreement, including issues of waivers and accommodation for participation in primaries, are being smoothened out by the former Governor Liyel Imoke-led PDP Contact and Integration Committee, which has been galvanizing our alliances among stakeholders across other parties, including those from the APC.”

He further noted that the PDP in addition to taking control in Abuja is ready to take back control of other states currently under the control of APC.

Ologbondiyan also urged supporters of the party to remain steadfast and wary of what he termed as gimmicks of the deflated APC which had “resorted to sponsoring spurious publications filled with deceptions, fabrications and lies against our party.

“The PDP also commends Nigerians across board for their overwhelming support and solidarity with the repositioned PDP as expressed in the unprecedented interest in our tickets for various elective positions, particularly the presidency, governorship and National Assembly positions, in addition to spirited public discourse at all levels of political engagements across our country.”

“These interests and movements from the APC to the PDP are indicators of the consensus by Nigerians to rally on the platform of the PDP to end the economic hardship, bloodletting, violence and infrastructural decay that have become the hallmark of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration, and return our nation to the path of unity, national cohesion and economic prosperity, which the PDP is known for.”
