Buhari suspends SGF and NIA DG, ordered thorough investigations into PINE contracts and Ikoyi N13billion recovered by the EFCC

After some months, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally decided to suspend Mr. David Lawal Babachir, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), from office and ordered an investigation into the allegations of violation of law and due process made against him in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).

Buhari also ordered a thorough investigation into the discovery of huge amount by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an apartment located at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The investigation panel comprises of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Babagana Monguno and headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) had initially made claims to the money but the investigation would enquire how, why and by whose authority the NIA came into possession of the funds. The investigation will also check whether or not there has been a breach of the law or security procedure in getting the money.

The Director General of the NIA, Ayo Oke, was also suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Also, the most senior Permanent Secretary in the SGF’s office and the most senior officer in the NIA are to act as SGF and DG of NIA respectively during the period of investigation.

The panel is to submit its report to President Buhari within 14 days.

Mr. Femi Adesina, President Buhari’s spokesman said that Mr. President ordered an investigation into the allegations of violation of law and due process made against Lawal in the PINE contracts award and also investigation into the discovery of huge amount by the EFCC in an apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos.

“The investigation is also to enquire into the circumstances in which the NIA came into possession of the funds, how and by whose or which authority the funds were made available to the NIA, and to establish whether or not there has been a breach of the law or security procedure in obtaining custody and use of the funds.

“The President has also directed the suspension of the Director General of the NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke, pending the outcome of the investigation,” Mr. Adesina said.
