Joshua Dariye sentenced to 14 years in jail for corruption

Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Federal High Court FCT has sentenced former Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State to 14 years in prison with no option of fine for corruption. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison for criminal breach of trust and 14 years for criminal misappropriation of funds.

The former governor was found guilty of diverting N1.162billion state ecological funds while serving as governor of the state from 1999 to 2007.

The former governor begged the prosecution lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs, to tamper justice with mercy while responding to his comments at the trial on Tuesday.

Dariye was found guilty of 15 count charge out of 23counts he was earlier charged with by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to Paul Erokoro (SAN), Mr. Dariye’s lawyer, his client was ignorant of the offence at the time it was committed. He noted that he (Dariye) was a victim of the long years of military administration and should be viewed as a victim because he was ignorant of financial fraud and most of their components”.

Rotimi Jacobs however drew the attention of the court to the many years of legal battle embarked upon by the former governor. While still speaking, Dariye stood up and asked Jacobs to be merciful as a Christian.

“Be merciful. You are a Christian, your name is Jacob,” Mr Dariye said.
