Why Lagos High Court ordered the unfreezing of former First Lady Patience Jonathan’s account containing $5.8million

Mrs. Dame Patience Jonathan

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday issued an order unfreezing the Skye Bank account of former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in November 2016 filed an application requesting for the freezing of Mrs. Jonathan’s account containing about $5.8million.

The judge ordered unfreeze of the account following an application filed and argued before the court by her lawyer, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

According to Mr. Adedipe, the suit was an abuse of court process as the court had no jurisdiction to make an order against one party who is not a party in a suit filed before the court.
