Good Day Nigeria! Here are few stories you need to know this Friday. Enjoy!
1. Chief Nnia Nwodo, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on the Igbo to get ready to defend themselves against any threat from the north.
Nwodo’s statement came as a reaction to the 30-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government by a northern group (The Coalition of Northern Group) to withdraw the suspension of the Ruga Fulani Settlement.
Naija Buzz News had reported how President Muhammadu Buhari suspended the Ruga Settlement project following vehement rejection from the south.
Afenifere, the apex Yoruba socio-political group, had condemned the FG plan, saying that no Fulani herdsmen settlement would be built on any Yoruba land. The group further noted that the project was a confirmation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo alarm that there was a plan to Fulanise and Islamise Nigeria.
We reported how all the governors from the southern parts of the country, including some in the North-Central region rejected the Ruga project. Read Naija Buzz News profound report on the Ruga Settlement issue.
2. The Supreme Court has declared Governor Gboyega Oyetola as the winner of the Osun State Governorship Election held on September 22 and 27, 2018 (the main election was held on Sept. 22, while a supplementary election was held on Sept. 27).
The apex court upheld the judgement of the Court of Appeal which cancelled the ruling of the Osun State Election Petitions Tribunal.
Senator Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, had challenged the victory of Governor Oyetola who is the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the poll.
The Tribunal in a split judgement had declared Adeleke the winner of the election and had order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue the PDP candidate a certificate of return. Read more
3. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted to the ruling of the Supreme Court on the September 2018 Osun State Governorship Election.
Naija Buzz News had earlier reported how the apex court nullified the judgement of the Osun Election Tribunal which sacked the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gboyega Oyetola, and declared the candidate of the PDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the poll.
The Supreme Court noted that the judge, Peter Obiora, who delivered the judgement at the Tribunal was evidently absent during hearing of the case and consequently does not have the authority to deliver the verdict. Read Atiku’s reaction
