Hameed Ali, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Services, while briefing journalists on Monday said that it intercepted 661 pieces of pump-action guns from China.
The guns which were concealed with steel doors and other merchandise goods came in through the Lagos port.
According to Ali, the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) while on patrol along Mile 2 Apapa Road in Lagos, intercepted a Mark truck with registration number BUG 265 XG conveying a 40ft container with number; PONU/825914/3.
The guns were discovered after the truck was taken to the FOU for physical examination. 49 boxes containing 661 pieces of pump action guns were discovered.
Three (3) suspects, Oscan Okafor (an importer), Mahmud Haruna (a clearing agent) and Sidique Mustapha, were arrested in connection with the firearms importation.
“Such deadly contravention of the law is even more unacceptable considering the fragile security situation in some parts of the country. The NCS Comptroller said.
“Investigation has already commenced and I have directed that the drag net should be wide enough to fish out all persons involved in the importation and clearing of the consignment, he added
