Good Morning Nigeria! Here are a few of what you need to know this Saturday morning🙂. Enjoy!
1. On Friday, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) issued an attestation certificate and a confirmation of school certificate result to President Muhammadu Buhari. During the buildup of the 2015 general election, Buhari who was a general in the army, had in a court affidavit stated that his credentials were with the Nigerian Army. “I am the above named person and the deponent of this affidavit herein. All my academic qualification documents as filled in my Presidential form, APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary of the Military Board as of the time of this affidavit,” Buhari said. The army however in its response noted that his WAEC result was not in his file. Mr. President was a subject of criticism from opposition politicians following his failure to present his WAEC certificate again to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2019 general election.
2. On Friday, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State picked a female as his running mate in the forthcoming 2019 election. This is apparently the first time a governorship aspirant going back for second term would pick a woman as running mate. His 2019 running mate, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, is the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency. Dr. Hadiza from Sanga Local Government Area in Southern Kaduna was born in 1966. She studied Medicine at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, and graduated in 1988. She served as the director of Public Health in the Federal Capital Territory before joining the Government of Kaduna State.
3. Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on Friday attacked the governors of Imo and Ogun States, Mr. Rochas Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun. The 2 governors had since the outcome of the APC primaries in their various states publicly criticized Oshiomhole. On Thursday, Okorocha said that the fortunes of the ruling party had witnessed a downturn since Oshiomhole took over as national chairman, while Amosun who according to reports has concluded plans to dump APC, said that Oshiomhole and his cohorts were working towards handing over Ogun State to a gang of expansionists. In his response, the APC chairman described Okorocha as an embarrassment to the APC. He further stated that Amosun was trying to act like an emperor, but under his leadership in the party, there is no place for emperors (Tinubu might however be an exception).
4. Mallam Ibrahim Musa, the spokesman for the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (aka Shiites) in a recent interview with Punch, alleged that the Nigerian Government has so far killed about 2,000 of its members. He noted that it all started on December 12, 2015 in Zaria Kaduna State. He alleged that the incident in Zaria was only a setup by security agents. He further noted that their marches and protests have always been peaceful, but security agents who kill their members cook up lies against them. Speaking about the recent incident in Abuja in which 49 of their members were killed, Musa said that they never came to Abuja to fight, they came to protest peacefully. He said that it does not make any sense to match someone with stones against another with gun.
