Good Morning Nigeria! Here are a few of what you need to know this Saturday morning 🙂. Enjoy!
1. The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Bauchi South Senatorial District bye-election, Lawal-Yahaya Gumau, says that if he is elected into the Senate, he will work towards the amendment of the Constitution to make sure President Muhammadu Buhari remains President for life. He noted that the only reason why he is going for senate was to protect Buhari’s interest. “I, Lawal-Yahaya Gumau, want you to know that the mandate that will be given to me on Saturday is to go and protect Buhari’s interest in the Senate. This is the only mandate that I will be going to the Senate with, having fulfilled every other mandate to the best of my ability while in the House of Representatives for eight years. By God’s grace, we will amend Nigeria’s Constitution to allow Buhari to be President for the remaining years of his life. He will only cease to be President when God takes his life,” he said.
2. Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, expressed confidence that Senate President Bukola Saraki will be impeached from office in accordance to law and democratic norms. “Saraki is not going to be the first senate president to be impeached and I doubt if he is going to be the last, but definitely he will be impeached according to law and to democratic norms.“The only way Saraki can avoid impeachment is for him to do what is honourable which again leads to the issue of character.” Oshiomhole added that unlike Senator Godswill Akpabio who resigned as Senate Minority Leader before defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC, “Senator Saraki has demonstrated neither character nor being a man of honour.”
3. Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed confidence that a million Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), cannot remove him from office. His statement is an apparent response to the APC Chairman who said that Saraki would be impeached. “We hereby assure this garrulous, tactless and reckless APC chairman that a million of Adams Oshiomhole cannot remove Saraki as Senate President. His illegal plots, can only feed his insatiable ego and keep him awake at nights. But it will remain an exercise in futility. The position of Oshiomhole and his cohorts in the APC that the Senate President must resign is a mere wishful thinking. They will continue to dream about their planned removal of the Senate President. They will need 73 Senators to lawfully remove Dr. Saraki and they will never get that in the present eight Senate,” the senate president said through his aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu.
4. Mr. John Audu, the Deputy Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, has defected from the ruling APC. According to the lawmaker representing Kachia Constituency, he consulted widely with his people before taking the decision which he described as a difficult one. He noted that the reason for his defection is the impunity in the APC. “I write to withdraw my membership of the All Progressive Congress APC with effect from 7th August 2018. “This is the most difficult decision ever taken after due consultation with the good people of my constituency. “However, I came to realize that most of the party supporters have left due to impunity and division in the local government and the state level of the party. Please accept my best regards,” he said.
