Nasir El-Rufai

Good Morning Nigeria! Here are a few of what you need to know this Saturday morning 🙂. Enjoy!

1. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State said that Senate President Bukola Saraki is leading the worst Senate in the history of Nigeria. “We have never had a bad senate leadership like this one by Bukola Saraki. Some people whose names were mentioned among those who defected said they never authorised it. We know those who cannot win elections in their homes. Many of them found themselves in the National Assembly by riding on the back of Buhari. Some of them won the elections because the presidential and parliamentary elections held on the same day,” he said.

2. The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, said that if the party fields Governor Samuel Ortom as candidate in 2019, the APC will lose Benue State. According to Oshiomhole, despite receiving billions of naira as bailout from the Federal Government, Ortom failed to pay salaries. He noted that the APC leaders in Benue gave him a red card because they didn’t want to field him in 2019 elections. “From the point of view of our leaders in Benue State, their position was clear. They believed that fielding Governor Ortom on the APC platform in the 2019 governorship election could only lead to electoral defeat for a number of reasons. They reminded us that in spite of the allocations accruing to the state and in spite of the bailout, amounting to over N20bn, which they had received in two instalments of N10bn each, and in addition to the huge sums of money that the state collected from the Paris Club Refund, Governor Ortom has not, and is not paying salaries to workers as and when due,” he said.

3. Those loyal to Senate President Bukola Saraki are ready for battle to ensure that Saraki remains the Senate President regardless of which party has the majority of members in the senate. The statement came following the pressure from the APC caucus for Saraki to step down. It will however be practically impossible as two-third of the senators is needed to sack a senate president.

4. Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, while speaking to journalists, expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari will win Sokoto, Kano and Bauchi States in 2019 even if Buhari is taken to the states on a sick bed. He noted that the governors of Kwara and Sokoto, Abdulfatah Ahmed and Aminu Tambuwal, would leave APC, but even with that, Buhari will win in 2019. “On those that defected at the House of Representatives and Senate, where do they come from? They come from areas that the President is comfortable. Do you honestly believe that the President will lose election in Sokoto? We are not God, but it’s one of his comfort zones. “If you bring the President on a sick bed to Bauchi and Kano, he will win and he has never lost election in Bauchi. But that is a bit arrogant on our side; we should not underestimate them,” he said.
