Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, in a recent statement warned officers to stay away from politics and all politically related activities.
The army chief stated this through the spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, on Tuesday.
“This is to inform the public that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, has received information that some individuals have been approaching some officers and soldiers for undisclosed political reasons. On the basis of that, he has warned such persons to desist from these acts”.
Buratai warned all officers who are interested in politics to resign.
“Any officer or soldier of Nigerian Army found to be hobnobbing with such elements or engaged in unprofessional conducts such as politicking would have himself or herself to blame.”
According to Premium Times Newspaper, an undisclosed top military official said that the Army Chief had raised the issue with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
The newspaper stated further that their military sources said that the Army was disturbed by rumours of coup being planned by junior army officers.
