Death toll in the Sunday attack by armed bandits in some communities under Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State rises to 16.
According to the traditional ruler of Mozum community, Khalid Bukar, while speaking in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, the violence started in the morning in Kpanche community, but however spread by afternoon to Ozugbe, Biroko, and other villages.
He also added that the Madaki of Biroko, Mohammed Umar, and 4 of his subjects were also victims of the attack, adding that he informed the security agencies of the attack, but before they arrived the damages had already been done.
The police confirmed the incident, adding that 10 persons were killed and that 6 of the bandits that invaded Kpanche were killed and weapons recovered.
According to the statement by the Kogi State Police Command spokesman, William Aya, he said that upon receiving distress calls from residents, mobile police officers and soldiers were immediately deployed to the located to restore peace and order.
“On sighting the security personnel, they opened fire at them, but were vehemently resisted by the fire power of the security personnel where six of the attackers were killed,” he said.
He also added that Mr. Ali Janga, the state Commissioner of Police, has ordered an investigation into the attack, adding that, “he vowed to prosecute anyone linked to the attacks no matter highly placed so as to serve as a deterrent to others.”
