Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has accused some political forces in Abuja over the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him a Certificate of Return as Senator-elect representing Imo West Senatorial District.
Rochas said that it was a plot by some people he respects to frustrate his chances at emerging a principal officer of the senate and also crippling his chances ahead of the 2023 general elections.
INEC had on Tuesday released the names of senators who would receive Certificate of Return, but Rochas name was omitted.
The electoral commission on Thursday issued the certificates to the senators elected during the February 23 National Assembly poll, but the governor was absent at the event.
“I was not there because INEC removed my name from the list of senators having been declared the winner by the zonal returning officer,” Okorocha said in Abuja on Thursday.
“So, I am actually waiting to hear why INEC struck my name out. I think probably, INEC must be trying to do something special because I understand once results have been declared and returns made, then you are bound to be issued a certificate of return. But to have exempted me, I am in darkness as to what was the reason why I was not invited to collect my certificate of return,” he added.
